We all know the importance of humble Tulasi (holy basil) in our life. The herb is the best air purifier with hordes of medicinal values. Also in Hindu tradition, the holy tulasi plant is worshipped and planted right in front of the door step which blesses with health and wealth.

History of Tulasi pooja:

During the churning of ocean (samudra manthana) by devathas and asuras , dhanvanthari (lord Vishnu) brought amrutha (nectar of immortality). The joyful tears from the eyes of dhanvanthari gave birth to tulasi who is the avatara (incarnation) of jambavati ( Sri Krishna’s wife).  Lord lakshmi resides in Tulasi and this is why Tulasi is important during worship/pooja.
All though goddess Lakshmi resides in tulasi always, during kartika masa she resides in tulasi to greater extent. So tulasi pooja is performed during this period.

Celebrating Tulasi Pooja :

The day after Deepavali amavasya , from padya till the next dwadhashi ( also called as uthana dwadhashi),  tulasi pooja is celebrated every evening in karthika masa. Decorating tulasi and singing bhajans circling to the holy plant is followed every evening.

The morning of uthana dwadhasi (the day when chaathur masa vratha ends) marriage of tulasi with lord Vishnu is performed morning.

Worshiping tulasi is believed to bring peace, health and wealth to our family.
