Sakrebyle Elephant Camp – A Day Trip from Mangalore for Kids


If you want a break from the noisy city this weekend and you love ecotourism, then here is the place you must plan for. There isn’t much to visit and don’t ever expect for the luxurious resorts, but yes you have the luxury of nature which is fading in city life. Calm and peaceful, across the dense forest and on the vicinity of river Tunga is the elephant training camp.

Sakrebyle is a small region located in Shivamogga-Thirthahalli road, 14km from Shivamogga district, Karnataka. We started from Mangalore at 5:30 am and reached sakrebyle at 8:30am. The gps map guided us the route starting from Mangalore, then karkala, Udupi, Agumbe, Thirthahalli and Sakrebyle.

About the Elephant camp:

The elephant camp is maintained and running under the Karnataka forest department housing elephants of all ages. The elephants who require proper attention due to illness, deficiency and uncontrollable behavior issues are brought to this camp. Also, elephants born in this captivity are also looked after. The camp has experienced mahouts for dealing and training these elephants.

The entrance fee is very economical. There is a separate fee for bathing the elephants and also for the elephant ride.

They have named every elephant and listed out its birth date/captivity date, behavior, illness if any, height and weight and the place from which it has been brought to the camp.

Fun activities:

What is so fun in this camp? The camp attracts the visitors especially children because of the interactive session between the elephants and the visitors. Early morning the elephants are brought for bathing for about 2 to 3 hours. The bathing hours starts at around 8am at lasts till 10am. These pachyderms are scrubbed and cleaned in the river tunga wherein they express their joy and happiness while in water. Also, you can also find elephants showing their love and spraying water in their trunk over the mahouts. Visitors can bath the elephants under the guidance of mahouts which is the real fun.

The wide area of the camp also has a play area for kids with swing and slide.

Overall this is a natures spot with chirping birds, greenery around, wild life and the flowing river and very important is, it is far away from the polluted city regions.
