DIY: Mango Leaf Thorana - Eco-friendly Traditional Door Hangings

Door decoration is one of the traditional Indian way of welcoming our beloved guests, festivals and family gatherings. Although nowadays we have many colorful plastic and beaded door hangings, it was originally made from mango leaves. Mango leaves coated with turmeric/haldi with fresh flowers in between gives a grand look to your house. 

Mango Leaf Thorana - Eco-friendly Traditional Door Hangings




Here is how you can make a simple ecofriendly torana.

Materials Required:

Mango Leaves - 15 (depends on the width of the door)
Scissors
Broomstick - 2
Thick rope

DIY Time: 15 minutes

Steps to prepare mango leaf thorana:

  • Collect few clean mango leaves of almost same size.
  • Cut them equally to same height from the tip of the leaf. All the leaves should be approximately of same length.
  • Tie a rope horizontally to a table. Make sure to maintain straight line so that you can easily pin the leaves.
  • Now slightly bend the top of the leaf and pin it to the rope using the small pieces of broomstick.
  • Continue pinning the leaves to the entire rope, may be around 12 to 15 leaves. 
  • Let there be some space at the ends of the rope in order to tie a knot to the nail of the door.
  • Simple Mango leaf thorana is done. 
  • Knot the thorana to the nails of the door. Traditional ecofriendly thorana for door decoration.
